How to Choose and Install Cord Ends for Hoodies and Sportswear

Hoodies (hooded sweatshirts), sweatpants, bags, and comfortable everyday wear have been essential parts of our wardrobes for years. However, even the most beautiful sweatshirt can be ruined by one tiny detail – a frayed drawstring.

Whether you are a dressmaker creating a new clothing collection or simply want to bring your favorite hoodie back to life, high-quality cord ends are the perfect solution. In this article, we will take a look at why hardware material matters and how to properly install knot-fixation cord ends at home.

Thread: Pull the drawstring through the cord end (from the narrow opening to the wider one).
Tie: Tie a tight knot at the tip of the drawstring. Trim any excess length.
Hide: Pull the drawstring back – the knot will completely disappear inside the cord end. Done!

🌿 Our First Prototype — Creating Soles Together

We have started a new project in collaboration with 3dprints.lv. Our first slipper prototype is ready. The soles were 3D printed, and the upper part was handmade.

The prototype is currently worn by our son, and we are testing:

how the sole;
holds up how the foot feels ;
what needs improvement;
what works well.

This is an early development stage, and that makes the process valuable. We are exploring ideas, experimenting with materials, and looking for solutions that feel comfortable and practical in everyday use.

The soles can be adapted not only for sewn slippers. They are also suitable for crocheted and knitted slippers, where makers often need a specific shape, thickness, or hole placement.

Two Years for One Pair: My Journey Knitting "Sack Socks"

Have you ever started a project thinking, "This will be a simple task," only to find yourself two years later with a completely new set of skills? That is exactly the story of my "kulīšu zeķes" (traditional Latvian sack-like socks).

It all began about four years ago at the Folk Applied Art Studio (TLMS) "Liepava." Thanks to the master craftswoman Sandra Brūne, I attended my first mitten-knitting masterclass and realized how little I actually knew about this ancient craft. But the real challenge was still to come.

What Exactly Are "Kulīšu Zeķes"?

When the suggestion to knit these socks first came up at the studio, my first question was: "What on earth are they?"

As it turns out, these are historical socks worn in ancient times when modern footwear didn't exist. Their "secret" lies in their size and how they were worn:

First, you would wrap your feet in footwraps (auti).
Then, you’d pull on these massive sack socks (kulīšu zeķes).
Finally, you’d step into leather pastalas or bast shoes (vīzes).

This is why they are unusually wide and large—they had to provide warmth over a foot already bundled in several layers.

160 Stitches and a Lesson in Perfectionism

The knitting process was no walk in the park. If anyone thinks knitting a sock is easy, try this:

The Scale: A single sock required 160 stitches per round.
Technique: I had to learn the traditional Rucava scalloped edges (robiņi) and intricate, colorful striped patterns.
The Embroidery: The central red pattern is actually embroidered. This was the biggest hurdle—it had to look perfect on both the outside and the inside.
Patience: I "frogged" (unraveled) and re-knitted the white section three times. Why? Because my impatience and incorrect proportions kept me from reaching the result I envisioned.

Altogether, this journey—from the first color sketch to the very last stitch—took two years.

Ancient Traditions Meet the 21st Century

Once the socks were finally finished, they needed to be washed and blocked to achieve their true shape. This is where my husband, Māris from 3dprintslv, stepped in. He modeled and 3D-printed custom sock blockers specifically for this project. By pulling the wet socks over these forms, they dried in a perfect, professional shape.

The Lesson: Even the oldest traditions can benefit from a little 21st-century engineering!

None of this would have been possible without my mentors, Sandra Brūne and Smaida Rubeze. Their advice and the support from the ladies at TLMS "Liepava" were the driving forces that kept me from giving up after unraveling that white yarn for the third time.

There is a heart that houses coziness, hospitality, and warmth — just like the scent of freshly baked bread and the breath of meadow flowers. It is because of such a heart that this apron was made – for Digiņu’s hostess, Daina.

The apron is not just a practical tool in the kitchen. It is a small token of gratitude and respect for a hostess who, with her own hands, patience, and warmth, creates a homely atmosphere.
I chose a grayish linen fabric because it is natural, calm, and stands the test of time – just like the hostess herself. I sewed on cotton lace – a delicate, feminine touch that adds a hint of vintage romance. The apron’s pocket is decorated with embroidery of meadow flowers – in various colors, yet harmoniously combined. Each flower symbolizes the joy of life and the strength that resides in Daina. On the chest – the words “Digiņu’s hostess Daina”, embroidered with care and love. Every swirl of each letter is a tribute to diligence and the warmth of the heart.

Sewn with Love: My Son’s First Graduation Suit

It all started with a simple question from a mom to her son: “Do you know what you’ll wear for your graduation?” He smiled and said he wanted a bright pink suit something bold, something that reflected him. That answer sparked an adventure I’d never taken before sewing a suit from scratch. A story of love, patience, and first times.

Finding the Right Fabric

I searched for almost two months – fuchsia was too loud, classic pink too pale. I knew I was looking for dusty rose – soft, warm, and quietly sophisticated. At last, I found it in “Poga” fabric store in Liepāja. There was just enough material, and I instantly knew: this is the one. For contrast, we chose a dark viscose lining from “Kreps”, and matching buttons that tied everything together. Everything seemed to fall perfectly into place.

The Sewing Challenge

Sewing a suit from scratch isn’t just about fabric it’s a test of patience, precision, and determination. It became my biggest project yet.I started with a mock-up from inexpensive fabric the first version was too small, but it taught me what to fix.The second one fit perfectly, and that gave me the confidence to move forward.The jacket was the hardest part the collar, welt pockets, proportions, comfort. The fabric was light, maybe too light for a traditional suit,but the color was exactly what my son had imagined.

More Than Just Clothes

This wasn’t just clothing. It carried love, time, and care in every stitch. The finished suit became proof of what can be achieved when you work with heart and courage. Seeing my son’s smile and pride on his graduation day that was the greatest reward of all. 💗

1. The Beginning – A Doll Comes to Visit

A very special doll arrived at my workshop – a little tired, with tousled hair and no wardrobe of her own. This was a wonderful opportunity not only to care for her, but also to create a brand-new clothing collection reflecting different moods and styles. 💫

2. The Clothing Collection – From Everyday to Celebration

This time, I created several outfits – from playful everyday dresses to festive ensembles with tulle skirts. Each piece is handmade – every stitch, every hem, and every detail crafted with love, care, and creative joy.

3. The Makeover – To Care, Adorn, and Love

The doll needed some pampering – we started with a gentle hair wash. It was one of the most heartwarming moments in the whole process. 🌸

Afterwards, her hair was dried, brushed, and styled, giving her a fresh, radiant look.

This small beauty ritual not only renewed her appearance but also brought new life to the entire collection.

4. The Ending – Or Just the Beginning

This was my very first doll fashion collection – and I’m already planning the next one. Right now, I’m on the lookout for a new model – a doll ready to inspire the next round of transformations and handmade clothing.
